چکیده

What’s the difference between “biological chemistry” and “chemical biology”? One of us (JMG) received his Ph.D. at an institution where the biochemistry building was called the Laboratory of Chemical Biology, but that was a long time ago and things have changed. Biological chemistry (or biochemistry), that is the study of life processes at the molecular level, is now quite distinct from chemical biology. According to Wikipedia, “Chemical biology is a scientific discipline spanning the fields of chemistry and biology that involves the application of chemical techniques and tools, often compounds produced through synthetic chemistry, to the study and manipulation of biological systems.”

Thematic minireview series: metals in biology 2010.

Metals are present in nearly one-half of protein structures analyzed to date and play important roles in many of these enzymes. This prologue introduces the third of the Thematic Minireview Series on Metals in Biology, which is focused on iron homeostasis. The four minireviews in the current series deal with redox cycling in iron metabolism, the biogenesis and assembly of iron-sulfur centers (t...

Introduction to Thematic Minireview Series: Novel Bioactive Sphingolipids.

Sphingosine was named by J. L. W. Thudichum for its enigmatic properties. This descriptor has applied to sphingolipids for over a century because new enigmas continue to surface. This JBC minireview series presents articles about three novel subspecies of sphingolipids, α-galactosylceramides, 4,5-dihydroceramides, and 1-deoxysphingolipids, that have important activities but, until recently, rem...

Introduction to the thematic minireview series on redox-active protein modifications and signaling.

The dynamics of redox metabolism necessitate cellular strategies for sensing redox changes and for responding to them. A common mechanism for receiving and transmitting redox changes is via reversible modifications of protein cysteine residues. A plethora of cysteine modifications have been described, including sulfenylation, glutathionylation, and disulfide formation. These post-translational ...

Thematic minireview series on circular proteins.

Circular proteins have now been discovered in all kingdoms of life and are characterized by their exceptional stability and the diversity of their biological activities, primarily in the realm of host defense functions. This thematic minireview series provides an overview of the distribution, evolution, activities, and biological synthesis of circular proteins. It also reviews approaches that b...
